The film starts off on a terrible foot. Yutaka is Taku's "friend," and asks Taku to leave work early simply to gaze at the new transfer student, Rikako, from a distance. You are not a real friend if you ask a friend to leave work, to lose an opportunity to make money, and to disregard their hard work to only look at a snobby and selfish bitch. Rikako is a demanding and childish person that only cares about what she wants, and completely disregards the people she drags along and fucks over. Infuriating is an understatement. I don't see how they can redeem her in any way. Her behavior is unacceptable. I understand that divorce is a challenging to accept, but to drag others into your issues because you can't handle it yourself, and to make things difficult for your parents, even though they are also suffering, is incredibly inconsiderate. She thinks the world revolves around her and throws a tantrum when things don't go her way.
The film demonstrated an awareness of how awful it is with this quote, which may be wrong because the subtitles were shit too:
The whole thing was starting to feel like a bad soap opera.
I didn't think I was going to hate another "Ghibli Film" more than Castle in the Sky, but life likes to surprise you.
1. Only Yesterday
2. NausicaƤ
3. Kiki
4. Porco Rosso
5. Totoro
6. Castle in the Sky
