I am a scaredy-cat, so I rarely ever delve into anything horror-related. I forgot how I came across this messed-up and grotesque manga, but I don't have any regrets. I only finished 6 volumes, but it took me three times to get here.
I mean it when I say Diner is a messed-up, disturbing, and blood-curdling story. In this sense, I think it succeeds as a horror story, so if you're an avid horror fan that's been underwhelmed with some of the current horror selection, this might impress you. Although the manga delivers horror, gore, action, and delicious food (it's called diner after all) consistently, you will be frustrated with the heroine.
The story follows a woman name Kanako, who, due to unfortunate circumstances, ends up being a waitress at Canteen, which is a secret restaurant for killers. This restaurant is managed by the enigmatic Bonbello (this guy is OP.) There's also the adorable and equally dead Kikuchiyo: he is Bonbello's vicious dog, friend, partner, and employee. There are many violently tussles because Kanako is a sympathetic person. Yes, she's not the sharpest tool in the shed, but without her stupidity, there wouldn't be drama, and that's what we're here for. In addition, she is simply being human. Are you seriously hating a character for being human? She is not desensitized to the world of crime. People need to stop passionately writing essays regarding how useless and unnecessary some characters are as these essays are equally unnecessary. Just enjoy the story! Last, but not least, it takes guts to stand up to these villains, something most of her complainers can't do because they are too busy pissing themselves.
The art is fantastic because it's detailed and high-contrast with heavy black, but sometimes I had difficulty reading because it was slightly illegible. Can you tell I watch tattoo videos? It does the most, and I am not used to the most because shoujo mangas are soft. The character designs are also unique. The killers look like the creepiest and dirtiest scum on earth, just look at Gideon... The plot is crazy because it does not stop; due to this, you will experience an addictive adrenaline rush. Sometimes the plot is too much and intense, but you don't care because it's just so entertaining.
This last thing is can be considered both a pro or a con. Given the horror-nature of the novel already brings up the age rating, the creators decided to insert some nudity/sexual situations because, why not?! It's R-rated anyway, might as well go out guns-a-blazing, literally. If you don't like sex in horror, I would still recommend this series because the horror is strong and because sexually explicit content does not appear on every page/chapter. If you love sex in horror, no judgment, this series is definitely for you!
